Most of you have probably heard about chiropractic care and its benefits for neck and back pain; you may have even heard some negative side effects or horror stories. However, this article is meant to clarify chiropractic and discuss all ranges of treatments, scope of care, and the philosophies at Chiropractic Health and Wellness Center. Chiropractic care can vary greatly depending on the provider, including assessment and treatment techniques. Finding the right chiropractic office for you starts with understanding.
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and their effects on your overall health through manual therapy, nutrition guidance, and exercise plans. A quick overview of how your first visit would go is as follows: consultation with the chiropractor to review medical history and current complaints, a complete examination with tests, and possible order of x-rays or blood tests. A follow-up visit will consist of reviewing exam findings and test results, as well as discussing your chiropractic treatment plan. Your progress will be monitored throughout your time.
One of the most common and well-known chiropractic treatment methods is chiropractic adjustments, or spinal manipulation. “The purpose of spinal manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile - or restricted in their movement - as a result of a tissue injury.” ¹ Injured tissues can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for an individual. An adjustment of the affected joint and tissues restores mobility, therefore alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and ultimately allowing tissues to heal. Other therapy modalities may be performed at your chiropractic visit depending on your needs. To put it simply, the body knows when a joint is not moving normally or is irritated, and the muscles around the area tighten to protect it - all of which causes stiffness and pain. Helping the body to help itself is the cornerstone to chiropractic. The body knows what to do, we just need to work with it to maximize function and healing. Dr. McKee-Bass believes strongly in using medical tools to properly assess and diagnose every patient, but also using experience and the body’s inherent ability to heal itself to optimize treatment success.
Dr. McKee-Bass strives to treat the whole patient, starting with the spine, but also discussing how dietary changes, exercise, nutritional supplementation, and stress-relieving practices can optimize health. It has long been observed by chiropractic physicians that a chiropractic adjustment not only restores joint motion and improves function, but also seems to improve overall function of the body. Patients have reported improved digestion, decreased allergy symptoms, less illness, and overall improved feeling of vitality. It is commonly misunderstood that chiropractic solely benefits neck and back pain, but now you know that it may improve other processes in the body, resulting in greater overall health.
